When to Change Your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy

Whether you own the property for a year or a decade, your homeowner’s insurance policy was never meant to stay the same. If you live in Raleigh, NC, it may be time to consider updating your policy so it can keep up with future claims. Young Insurance Associates Inc. would like to share just a few common reasons why you might want to change it.

You Bought More Things

A diamond ring, a new television, a valuable art piece: these are just a few things under your roof that could be lost, damaged, or stolen. If you first bought the home straight out of college when you had little more to lose than some Ikea furniture, it’s possible that your policy limits wouldn’t even come close to replacing the potential losses.

You’re Using Your Home Differently

Whether you’ve taken up a new hobby in Raleigh NC or you’re working more from home, your insurance company may need to know about it. If your business equipment was stolen after a break-in, it’s possible your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover the claim if the claims processor wasn’t aware of your home being used as a commercial space.

You Want More Communication

It’s not always easy to get in touch with your insurance company (or to get meaningful answers once you do get in touch with them). If you’re tired of the runaround, you should find a company who will form a real relationship with you. It’s the best way to avoid any surprises the next time you file a claim.

If you want more information about your homeowner’s policy in Raleigh, NC, Young Insurance Associates Inc. can help. Our knowledgeable staff can walk you through any of your questions to see if it makes sense to keep your current coverage.

Summer car maintenance checklist: Help your vehicle beat the heat

Dehydration, heat stroke, serious sunburns — we are all accustomed to the dangers of hot weather presents for our bodies. However, how often do you stop and think about how soaring temperatures impact your automobile? Before the mercury rises this year, use these tips and tricks to stay on top of the weather and other summertime issues. Every preventative measure taken will help keep your car running smoothly on the road and help you avoid major breakdowns and potential accidents due to lack of maintenance.

Check your tire inflation

Car tire inflation rises and falls with temperature. In the winter, cold air can lead to underinflation. If you added a few pounds of air to your tires in the last cold snap, it may be time to bleed some air off before the next heat wave. This is important because overinflated tires will wear out more quickly and, potentially, increase your likelihood of facing a hazardous driving situation due to a failing tire.  Use an air gauge to measure inflation. If it’s above the recommended PSI printed on your tire — generally 32 to 35 PSI for a passenger car — let some air out and measure again.

Check your oil between oil changes

If you already get your oil changed at prescribed intervals, congratulations are in order. You are investing in the long-term health of your vehicle. Consider taking it one step further during the summer months by checking your oil in between changes. If your engine is older or not running optimally, it’s working even harder in the hot weather to stay cool and power your AC. If your oil dips too low, serious engine problems and roadside breakdowns can follow. Regular peeks at the oil level also allow you to check for signs of debris or discoloration on the dipstick. Dirty oil can indicate a mechanical problem you need to get checked as soon as possible.

Keep other fluids up-to-date

Summer brings changes beyond temperatures. Increased bird activity and an abundance of insects can lead to windshield spatter of varying types. Keep your windshield wiper fluid topped off so you can clean up in a pinch. Coolant also works double-time in the hot weather, so check your antifreeze’s quality to determine if a change is needed. Overheating your car can lead to a loss of power — a dangerous situation on a busy highway.

Stay safe on the highway this summer using the above safety tips, and visit Young Insurance Associates Inc online or in person in Raleigh, NC to discuss your automobile insurance needs and receive a quote for a new policy before hitting the road this summer.

Why Do I Need Umbrella Insurance?

You’ve worked hard for everything that you have and you want to be able to protect it. Having umbrella coverage can do that. When you start your search for umbrella insurance coverage, look no further than right in your own backyard in Raleigh, NC. The Young Insurance Associates Inc agents are there to help you with what you need.

Umbrella insurance is liability coverage that starts where your homeowners, watercraft, or auto insurance ends. For example, if your maximum liability coverage is $100,000, but you are sued and must payout more, an umbrella policy could cover the overage.

You’ll need umbrella insurance if you:

  • Own a home – if you’re held liable for an accident that happens in your home or on your property, the resulting lawsuit could cost you more than your home insurance policy will allow. The rest of the settlement would have to come out of your own pocket unless you had umbrella insurance.

  • Have significant assets

  • Have a pool – someone who owns a pool may be sued if a person invited to the house was injured during while swimming. If you are held responsible for the incident, your insurance company will only pay for the limits that are stated in your policy. Beyond that, you would need umbrella insurance to cover the rest.

  • If you have a boat – your watercraft coverage also has limits just like your homeowner’s policy, which may or may not cover your boat. Check with your local insurance agent to see if your home insurance will cover a boating accident. Even if it does, that coverage has limits where umbrella coverage would start to payout a liability suit.

The Raleigh, NC agents are a good place to start looking for umbrella insurance. At Young Insurance Associates Inc, you’ll be able to find the perfect coverage for your situation.

Will RV insurance cover what’s inside?

If you’re a part-time RVer who spends most of your time at home in Raleigh, NC, you probably don’t keep much in your vehicle besides vacation supplies, cooking gear, things like that. If you’re a full-time RVer, whether that means living a totally nomadic lifestyle or just doing month-long trips a few times a year, the RV is your home, it carries your whole life in it, so it’s good to know that your belongings are covered in the event of theft or an accident.

What Does RV Insurance Cover?

As a general rule, you can expect that a basic RV policy will cover whatever was in or attached to the RV when you bought it. Or if you’ve done some remodeling, then you’re covered on whatever you added to it. But you shouldn’t expect that your basic policy is going to cover every tea kettle, blanket, and book you’ve loaded into the vehicle for your next trip.

But, you do have the option of buying additional insurance through Young Insurance Associates Inc to cover your valuables. As a general rule: If you can put a monetary value on something, then someone offers insurance on it.

Just note that you need to keep that policy updated, just as you would a policy on the valuables you keep in your home. If you just finished a major shopping trip to deck your RV out with creature comforts like a Blu-ray player and silk sheets, then you’re going to want to make a stop at your insurer or pick up the phone and call. And just like your valuables at home, you’ll want to keep receipts and photos of anything you want to be covered. Give Young Insurance Associates Inc a call and see what they can do for you.

Have A Peace of Mind with Renters Insurance

Do you currently rent a home or apartment in Raleigh, NC? If so, consider the benefits of purchasing a renter insurance policy today. While the structure you are living in may be covered by the owner’s insurance policy, in the event of an accident or fire, your belongings can be destroyed and you can be displaced. Young Insurance Associates Inc understands the importance of renter insurance and how an uninsured tenant can accrue quite the financial obligation during such a tragedy.

Property and Possession Coverage

With renters insurance, your belongings are covered and insured, allowing replacement should there be an unforeseen accident such as a fire or natural disaster. These possessions include any items that belong to you or your family members staying in the home. Without coverage, the structure of the building will be covered by the homeowner, but your possessions as the renting tenant will be your own responsibility to replace those possessions. The most responsible option you can take is to purchase renters insurance.

Displacement Coverage

Often times, renters find themselves temporarily displaced during these accidents. Clean up and renovation may be required to restore the home back to occupancy. Sometimes the structure may be destroyed beyond repair and you will need to seek permanent housing. During this transition, temporary housing is required. With renters insurance, these expenses are covered and your insurance will cover any temporary lodging expenses until you either return to the original dwelling or find a new rental property.

Motorcycle Insurance and Multiple Riders

Riding Your Motorcycle Can Be a Party – But You Have To Do Your Homework First

Our agents want to make your experience riding your motorcycle one of sheer enjoyment. It is important to gain some knowledge first before your personal party begins so that the enjoyment is everlasting.

The state of North Carolina does not make Guest Passenger Insurance GPL mandatory. That means that you have to add it to your standard policy if you intend to have guests ride along with you. This is an important factor for all riders to consider at the outset. Many riders feel that they will not have guests at all. However, it is easy to have the once in a lifetime occasion when you allow someone else onto the back of your bike changes your life forever. In short, it is not worth the risk. Insure for the once in a lifetime. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Speak with an agent today to discuss all of the possible scenarios in which you may ride your motorcycle. North Carolina allows motorcycles to be added to your auto insurance policy as a miscellaneous vehicle. This extension gives you – the primary rider protection. Other operators are not covered in this instance. This is why it is important to be completely honest about just who will operate and be a passenger on your bike.

Why You Need a Condo Insurance Policy in Addition to the HOA Master Insurance Plan

Are you considering purchasing additional condo insurance for your condo in addition to the master Homeowners Association (HOA) Master insurance plan? If so, consider the difference in the coverage of the two policies. Young Insurance Associates Inc serves the Raleigh, NC community with condo insurance for condo owners.

What does the HOA Master Insurance Plan cover?

The HOA Master Insurance plan generally consists of the exterior of the condo and any property attached to the building. For example, everything from exterior windows to the parking garage is included in the master policy. Any portion of the property that is shared among residents is considered covered under this policy, as it applies to all property areas except for the condos. Liability of visitors is covered in these property areas that are accessible by all residents.

What this policy does not include is the interior contents of each individual condo. Essentially, structural coverage falls to the responsibility of the Master HOA insurance policy for most condos.

What does Condo Insurance cover?

Condo insurance covers any property and damages that occur within the interior of the condo, which is essentially what is left out of the HOA Master Insurance policy. Because this area is considered yours and your families, it is not a part of the master coverage but it covered as the primary property of the condo insurance. If your property is damaged or stolen while within the condo, your insurance policy will cover and reimburse you for any lost items.

Do All Businesses Need to Have Commercial Insurance?

As any business owner knows, there are many different decisions that need to be made on a regular basis. One decision that will need to be made if you are the head of a business is whether or not to get commercial insurance. While it may be an additional expense that you would like to avoid, there are several reasons why all businesses need to have commercial insurance in place.

Meets State Requirements

One reason why you will need to have a commercial insurance policy in place is that it will help to ensure that you can meet the state insurance requirements. In North Carolina, you are required to carry workers compensation insurance if you have three or more employees. This type of insurance will provide the necessary coverage in the event someone is injured while working for you.

Lender Requirements

Another key reason why you need to have commercial insurance is that it will be required by a lender. If you have a business, you may eventually need to take out a loan to finance your growth. If you do take out a loan for any reason, the lender will undoubtedly require that you carry liability insurance at all times. This will provide you and your lender with protection in the event you are sued for liability. Many customers and investors will also want to confirm that you are covered by liability insurance.

If you have a business in the Raleigh, NC area and are considering your commercial insurance needs, you should speak with the team at Young Insurance Associates Inc. Insuring a Vacation Home and a Primary Residence

It is nice to have a vacation home. Of course, a vacation home also needs to have home insurance. There are special considerations that come up for those who have both a primary residence and a vacation home. It is important to discuss the specifics with your agent at Young Insurance Associates Inc, serving Raleigh, NC and the surrounding communities. This helps when making decisions about how to have adequate insurance coverage for both properties.

Things to think about and talk about with your agent include:

  • Occupancy: Insurance coverage requirements will be different depending on how each home will be occupied during a full year. Homes that are left vacant for part of the year have a different risk profile than homes that are always occupied.
  • Regular Maintenance: Unoccupied homes may suffer from neglect if they do not receive regular maintenance. Landscaping, exterior finishes, and the general condition of the property all need to be maintained properly, especially if the home is not occupied.
  • Rentals: If either your primary residence or your vacation home will be rented to others for part of the year, this affects the type of home insurance coverage needed. Renting a property creates a commercial use of the home, which requires different insurance.
  • Benefits of Insuring with a Single Underwriter: Sometimes there are benefits that come from using the same insurance underwriter for both homes. Ask your agent to explain the particulars.
  • Home Security: Alarms, video surveillance systems, and security companies that watch a property are beneficial in protecting the property and may have a positive impact on the insurance coverage.
  • Caretakers: For luxury properties, having a professional caretaker, whose background has been checked thoroughly, may be desirable. Be aware that having an employee means the property may need commercial insurance. Ask your agent about this issue before hiring a caretaker.

3 Tips to Prepare Your Boat For Winter Storage

Unfortunately, summer in Raleigh, NC is coming to an end, which means it’s time to put your boat in storage for the winter. Whether you spend every free minute on the water or you only occasionally take the boat out to go fishing, you know how tedious it can be to prepare your boat for the winter. Whether you are storing your boat in a rented storage facility or your garage, here are a few tips to make sure it’s ready for winter storage.

Fill the Gas Tank

If the gas tank is empty, it will start to get moisture in it any gas that is left in the tank will turn to water, which will cause your gas tank to rust and corrode. So, make sure the gas tank is filled and you should add a fuel stabilizer before storing it for the winter. You should also change the oil before parking it in storage and if it’s being stored outdoors, be sure to remove the battery and any other electronic devices.

Do a Thorough Cleaning

There are a couple of reasons why it is essential that you thoroughly clean your boat before putting in storage. First, this will give you an opportunity to identify any issues with the boat, such as areas that need to be repaired or painted. Second, making sure the boat is clean before storing it will help to prevent the risk of mold and mildew growing. Once the boat is completely clean, be sure to apply an anti-corrosion spray to help protect the exterior. The boat should also be covered to keep dust and moisture out.

Drain Coolant & Pump the Holding Tank

Be sure to drain the coolant from the engine and replace it with a propylene glycol based antifreeze, which is non-toxic and if it is in an enclosed storage facility, you won’t need to worry about the release of toxic fumes. One of the last things you’ll need to do is make sure to pump the holding tank, making sure to flush the head several times with clean water.

The last thing you should have to do before leaving your boat for the winter is to make sure you clear the boat out. Remove the fire extinguishers, cushions, personal items and don’t forget to clean out the refrigerator and/or fish holders. Also, remember to contact Young Insurance Associates Inc to inquire about any changes in your boating insurance, such as discounts for seasonal storage.
